Biography
Dennis Horstmann – better known as Special D. – is one of the most defining figures in the international Dance and HandsUp scene. What began in 2003 as the steep ascent of a 21-year-old boy from Hamburg is today one of the most consistent and successful careers in the European DJ business.
The Breakthrough
With his debut single “Come with Me” in 2003, he not only stormed No. 13 on the German Single Charts but also celebrated massive international success with Top 10 placements in the Netherlands and Great Britain (No. 6). His second single, “Home Alone”, which skillfully combined Dance with breakbeats and hip-hop elements, ultimately cemented his status as a shooting star. The rewards: an ECHO nomination, the Dutch top music award “TMF Award” for Best International Dance Act, as well as a nomination for the Radio 538 Award in the category Best Song of 2003.
Musical Roots & Producer Successes
Dennis laid the musical foundation at the age of 13 on keyboards and pianos. Shortly thereafter, he took over the management of the school’s own recording studio and upgraded his first home studio with the money from his confirmation. After being discovered by Brooklyn Bounce producers Dennis Bohn and Matthias Menck, Special D. quickly developed into a sought-after studio mastermind. He produced and wrote tracks for well-known artists such as DJ Dean, DJ Digress, Dickheadz, and Sylver.
Present Day: Major Festivals & Modern Collabs
Today, over 20 years and well over 1,000 DJ sets later, Special D. is more in demand than ever. Amidst the massive 2000s and Hypertechno revival, he is an absolute guarantee for sold-out stages and ecstatic crowds. His sets are a permanent fixture in the line-ups of Europe’s most significant EDM and Dance festivals – including Parookaville, Airbeat One Festival, Between The Seas Techno Festival and Millennium Beats Open Air on the Vienna Danube Island.
In recent years he excelled through high-profile collaborations with the superstars of the modern EDM scene: W&W x Harris & Ford x Special D. released a massive remake of his classic “Come With Me” (2022) on the renowned label Rave Culture, followed by the festival banger “Another Day In Paradise” (2024). In 2023 he celebrated a acclaimed rework of “Prince of Love” together with 00s Dance icon DJ Sammy.
